==Ingredients== * 1 cup red lentils (or yellow or brown lentils) * 3.5 cups water * 2 onions * 2 cloves garlic * 1 teaspoon cumin seeds * Salt * Pepper * 1 teaspoon garam masala * 4 tablespoons vegetable oil * A few leaves cilantro , chopped (optional) ==Instructions== # Rinse the lentils with water, drain for 10 minutes and pat dry. # Heat oil over medium heat. Fry the onions and garlic for 1 minute and add the pepper, cumin seeds, cardamom, salt and garam masala and continue to fry for 30 seconds until fragrant. # Add the lentils and sauté for another minute. # Cover with cold water and cook covered over medium heat until the lentils get a little mushy (about 1 hour). # Garnish with chopped cilantro (optional).
